Together, SC is pleased to partner with Colonial Life /Unum to produce four virtual leadership learning sessions for selected Unum/Colonial Life employees. 


These sessions will focus on the fundamentals of nonprofit board service.

Participating employees will gain a greater understanding of their responsibilities and duties as board members.   

We hope that your board service will be more worthwhile for you and more beneficial to the nonprofits you serve.  

Session Objectives

Governance: Duties & Responsibilities of Board Members

Speaker: Charles Weathers, The Weathers Group

  • Deepening Understanding of Strategic Governance: Equip new board members with a robust understanding of the distinction between governance and management, focusing on their role in strategic oversight. 
  • Cultivating a Culture of Inclusive Leadership: Foster an inclusive board culture where diverse perspectives are actively sought and valued.
  • Enhancing Adaptive Governance Practices: Prepare board members to navigate and lead through change and uncertainty by teaching adaptive governance practices.

Legal Considerations for Board Members

Speaker: Clay Grayson, Grayson Law Firm

  • The Board of Directors provides oversight of a nonprofit's operational and financial performance. This includes using tools like the Form 990 Tax Return and Audited Financial Statements to develop objective metrics.
  • Metrics such as intergenerational equity, stewardship ratio, reserve ratio, fundraising efficiency, and operating reliance on programmatic revenue will be examined.
  • Attendees will learn about the fiduciary responsibilities of a Director in a nonprofit and gain tools and skills to feel empowered in this role.
  • Understanding nonprofit-oriented metrics will help set target goals that align with the organization's industry, culture, and strategy.

Nonprofit Finances and the Board's Fiduciary Responsibilities

Speaker: Patrick Jinks, The Leader's Perspective 

  • Understand the 3 primary nonprofit financial statements. 
  • Learn the role of annual audits and the IRS 990.
  • Explore the responsibilities for investing in the organization's success in relation to terms like ‘overhead’ and ‘ROI’.
  • Learn the tenets of the ‘double bottom line’.
  • Align the strategic plan and the budget (what do they have to do with each other?).
  • Understand the link between finance and fund development.
  • Learn to plan the organization’s finances across a 3-day horizon.

Relationship Building in Fundraising 

Speaker: Heather Singleton, Strategic Public Relations Consulting

  • Explore donor management basics to create development plans.
  • Define board member expectations relative to fundraising and development.
  • Use brand experiences and storytelling to engage donors irrespective of giving levels.
  • Assess nonprofit development myths and best practices in preparation for service.

What to Expect:

  • Sessions will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and over Zoom  

  • Capacity will be limited to 60 employees. 

  • Sessions will be interactive. Bring your questions and come ready to share your own real life board service experiences. 

  • Facilitators will utilize interactive tools like polls and breakout rooms to allow active participation. 

 

The faculty includes seasoned presenters and consultants who regularly facilitate C-suite level learning sessions.

You are encouraged to complete all four sessions.
