As one who has served on many nonprofit boards, including currently serving on Together SC's Board of Directors, I've found great personal and professional benefits in working to advance missions vital to me.
I've also learned that boards must work as a team to be effective. Board members must respect each other's skills and expertise, communicate well and work to build trust.
To my way of thinking, building a board that's a true team begins with thoughtful recruitment of its members.
I'm excited about Together SC's new partnership with BoardStrong, an online board member recruitment tool FREE for Together SC members.
As CEO of SC Community Loan Fund, I see this new online portal as a great way to share the needs and opportunities for board service with the Loan Fund with potential candidates across the state.
As a former bank executive, I love the detailed profiles Board Strong creates for individuals volunteering to serve. Sharing your desires and abilities up front will make for better placements and more rewarding service. Plus, the site allows you to reach out to organizations whose mission interests you.
Serving on a nonprofit board of directors can be a wonderfully rewarding way to give back to your community. And the support an exec receives from a fully engaged and committed board makes the job much more enjoyable and rewarding.
BoardStrong will work best if we all invest the time upfront to utilize the site effectively. Thank you for helping build this tool to advance our boards and work.
BTW, our Peer Networks will roll out new listservs on August 15th. Be sure to sign up for the Networks that interest you before then.
Finally, ICYMI, Shawn Edwards, and Darrin Goss, this year's Summit Planning Committee co-chairs, have shared the Summit theme and call for session proposals.
